Dan and his wife Jane moved to Waterloo, Iowa from Kansas City, Missouri in 1974. They took over management as an independent contractor of the Roto-Rooter franchise and operated the franchise for over 16 years. At that time they started the Drain Doctor and got away from the Roto Rooter franchise operation.

For 25 years Jane and Dan traveled all over the United States on motorcycles. They logged over 300,000 miles of fun. When she got sick and passed away he sold his bike and started to expand the business.

Jane and Dan were foster parents for older boys that the state of Iowa had trouble placing. They loved helping those boys - six of which are all married with families of their own still call him Dad and have named children after him. They are scattered around the country, but stay in close contact with Dan. One son actually helps tremendously with the business. He is also a member of El Kahir. Dan's biological son lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dan was raised in Martin Lodge #624 in Waterloo, demitted to Waterloo Lodge #105 in 2010, a member of the Scottish Rite and a very proud member of El Kahir Shrine. He became President of the El Mecca Shrine Club in 1999 then again in 2002. That term was when the Club building was sold and moved the El Mecca Club into the Masonic Temple in Waterloo, where it still exists and Dan is still a board member.

Dan is a member of the Vintage Auto Shrine Unit, the El Mecca Club, the Hospital Dads and the Kruzers - all of El Kahir.

Dan is also a State board member of the Iowa Onsite Waste Water Association.
